they were not always dead! the island was real with special powers. Jack saved them and he saved the island and HE died at the end. The whole sideways story line is many years in the future when they ARE all dead (Hugo mentions to Ben how he was a great #2 etc). Desmond helped them all “remember” so that they could “move on”. Ben wasn’t ready to move on yet perhaps because of all the evil he had done. |

It ended just like Titanic, when everyone is waiting for Rose before they can pass. Everyone sat at the church until Jack came, and then they all left together.
Minus Ben, cause he wasn't ready.
