I think so.
Look at the programming: Fantasia, Pep, Aspen and in a different way, Celebrity Rehab. The celebreality of the past is being toned down with Frank and a real softball Celebrity Fit Club (upcoming).
The absolute craziness of Flavor, IheartNY and the reunion shows is gone forever. I Love Money? The latest rumor is that they're going to re-shoot ILM3 this summer- I wouldn't get your hopes up.
The reason against all this can be found in today's programming, specifically at Noon and then at 1PM. At noon is the premiere of a VH1 News show about sexual abstinence in an over-sexed society. Then, more importantly, a re-run of Dr Drew's look at celebrities' drug issues as it's tied to their narcissism.
This last one is extremely important in that it shoots a huge arrow at the very type of programming of VH1/MTV: reality shows that create out of control, narcissistic people. It's also detailed in Dr Drew's recent book which he hypes throughout the 1PM show. One of his chief points is that, in our cries for "we want trash!", we are becoming narcissists ourselves. If you don't understand the meaning of narcissism, you may want to look it up- Ryan Jenkins and Miss NY are two examples.
So I think all this programming is really a conscious decision by VH1 to change the course- I think the Ryan Jenkins debacle really shook them up, more than we know.
Don't shoot the messenger...I'm not sure I agree with all this, especially the part about the viewers becoming narcissists. This is the same school of thought that says you're more likely to murder if you see countless murders on TV and become immune to them.
All arrows point in a swift direction of change- one which many of us don't like. But what to do?
