It was sympathy... Donald would be an asshole if he did not choose Bret. Holly did better in my opinion, but she knew Bret would win, Donald also gave them half a million dollars to their charities each and both their Snapple drinks are on shelves so they both won! Bret just got the title.

Everyone seemed to think it was sympathy. Bret did effin awesome though. Everyone sorta saw the "real him" and not just some dude tryin' to bang ho's like on ROL.
