HTML5 is being developed as the next major revision of HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), the core markup language of the World Wide Web. The Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG) started work on the specification in June 2004 under the name Web Applications 1.0.[1] As of October 2009, the specification is in the "Last Call" state at the WHATWG.[2] HTML5 is the proposed next standard for HTML 4.01, XHTML 1.0 and DOM Level 2 HTML.[glow=red,2,300] It aims to reduce the need for proprietary plug-in-based rich internet application (RIA) technologies such as Adobe Flash, Microsoft Silverlight, Apache Pivot, and Sun JavaFX.[/glow] Very useful info, I encourage you all to read the wiki article here

There is no "drop date", because its a developed standard language over time. It has been developing for years and it will continue for several more.

Dude, if I could provide you the answer w/o sounding too technical you know I would. But this subject isnt something I can break down in a generalized statement. IF, you're REALLY wanting to know what this all means for us as 'users' & what to expect to come, check out these articles. I am NOT a developer, so i don't want to give you an inconsistent answer. Check out Jeremy Allaire's post regarding HTML5 here. An article from gizmodo.com discussing how they believe HTML5 wont save the internet. And the wiki article I posted earlier.

Yeah, HTML5 will take over.
The Android vs. Apple fume will prove which flash-based system will remain superior. Apple claims they never wanted Flash on their iPhone because it's too glitchy, so they're waiting for HTML 5. HTML5 will render Adobe obsolete in the near future. Flash has gotta go, it may seem to work fine wuth the average user, but it's the worst thing ever to hit the internet. More than 60% of PC/Mac crashes is due to Flash. Not good.
